Why We Began
After hearing about student-athletes dying on the playing fields for no apparent reason, we looked into heart screens and sports physicals. The driving question was, why are these kids dying when the medical technology is available to detect these conditions?
In 1999 we founded Sportlink and began offering the Sportlink Physical, a high quality, low cost cardiovascular-focused physical for students and athletes. In a widely unstandardized industry, we brought standardization and addressed the issue of sudden cardiac death.
In addition to providing the nationally recommended physical, we made the decision to include a cardiac ultrasound screen with the Sportlink Physical. The purpose of the ultrasound screen, which includes two views and measures heart walls and chambers, is to eliminate the most common causes of the sudden cardiac death among youth.
Having our own families, we understood the importance of convenience. In order to provide convenience to students and parents alike, we chose to perform mobile screenings on site at schools.
Since our inception we have screened nearly 20,000 students. Four of these students have received heart surgeries as a result of the Sportlink Physical. We think its worth it.
Where We Are Now
The Sportlink Physical is better than a typical doctors visit, but there is room to make it better. We estimate the sensitivity for detecting sudden cardiac death conditions with the Sportlink Physical to be 50%. That leaves half of the possible conditions undetected.
To address the remaining conditions, we teamed up with the most trusted cardiologists in the country and designed the Cardiac Life Screen, which is over 90% accurate in detecting any potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions.
The Cardiac Life Screen is the first packaged cardiac service of its kind. Its a synergy of medical advancements in technology, the expertise of world-class cardiologists, and the availability and convenience of Sportlink.
Where We are Going
It has always been our goal to eliminate sudden cardiac death in America. We are making bold steps in that direction and are committed to seeking out the best ways through relationships and technology to reach our goal.
